Scandosotan As She Is Spoke, or, A Guy Might Be More Understandable, Ya Know OK, we're going to start today's Scandosotan explorations by looking at the phrases "a guy" and "a person," and trying to unfold the cues that tell you whether "a guy" means me, you, J. Random Guy-on-the-street, one, that guy over there who can't hear us, you over there who can hear us, or something else entirely.
Amazingly versatile phrases, "a guy" and "a person." I tend to use them interchangeably, though it's handy having two in some cases. If a guy is explaining to a person how it works, for instance. Which a guy is. See, in that case a guy was me and a person was you.
OK. If a guy had questions, a guy could ask. It'd be handy, even. Or if a guy has other examples.
(Anybody want to translate that last paragraph?)
Addendum: there are also some exercises in the comments, so come on in and try them if you feel like it. Um, a guy could, if a guy felt like it. Including one where you get to tell me to put some darned boots on and a real coat, for cat's sake. |
