Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend  Next Entry
amidst the frustration, a very good thing
You guys know what CART is?

Well, they've got it at the hospital I go to. (I could have had it for that damned mandatory joint-replacement class, if they had told me they had it when I called to check on accessibility and transcripts, damn it!) Anyhow, I'm going to have it! I get it all day surgery day, and on discharge day, and (it looks like) for rounds and PT and OT!!!!!

This could be a good thing, I am thinking*. I'll let you know how it works out.

* This is wild Scandosotan understatement, as shown by the fact that I used up a week's worth of exclamation points in the previous sentence.

Yes. Once I find out if it works well, I am going to make sure MORE PEOPLE KNOW that they have CART AT FAIRVIEW RIVERSIDE -- but that almost none of the individual clinics know they have it, so you have you know to request it. (Incoherent and very fierce grumble deleted, but you know what I mean. But still, they have it. And I'm going to get it.)

I have never heard of CART before, I think it's brilliant, I'm thrilled that you will have the use of it, and good grief that hospital needs better internal communication!

Now, that is one for the win column.

A little story, because I need to tell someone, and I think you'll all understand this better than some:

I am teaching right now (a 3rd year undergraduate course at a large university), and have a Deaf student who attends class with ASL interpreters. This student is so on the ball and willing and able to advocate for herself - and TELL ME WHAT SHE NEEDS, without assuming that I either 1) know, or 2) SHOULD know. It is fantastic, and I'm learning so much. After the first week, she sent me an email to recap how the first couple lectures went for her, and told me about a host of other disability issues she has, in conjunction with the Deaf, that are affecting her. She gave a couple suggestions that would help her - all of them completely, totally reasonable, no issues from my end - and apologizing for not telling me about them before.

As she explained, in previous experience (for her and her counsellor at accessibility services), they've found that when it comes to her course instructors, "I'm scary enough being Deaf." This made me laugh. I told her I don't consider her scary in the least, and even with her other health issues, I'm perfectly happy to do what I can - and she gives me reasonable, concrete requests that will help her and affect no one else's learning experience, so what's to be afraid of?

And then she told me this: Apparently, other departments have actually refused requests as simple as - believe it or not - KEEPING THE LIGHTS ON DURING LECTURES (if they're using a projector) so she can, you know, SEE THE INTERPRETERS. Because "it makes the professor feel like a rotisserie chicken with the lights on." In that situation, her ASL translator practically has to sit on top of her. And then she said, and I quote, "This is what I am used to...I forget the people in the linguistics department actually have souls."

Yeah. Damn. I mean... Wow.

Yes, Exactly. And with the Damn.

which pretty much translates to:

Thank you for telling me this one, and I do indeed get it.

Also, go her! (And go you for being a good teacher.)

(And suddenly remembering: I had a teacher who was brilliant, and I really wanted to learn what she had to teach, but she paced back and forth the whole time, so half of everything she said was facing away from me, on average. And she couldn't seem to NOT do that, even when I talked to her about my desire not to miss anything she said.)

Some things become so ingrained people don't even realize they're doing it - and even if they are reminded, they'll do better for a while (maybe) until the reminder fades and they slip back into the old habit.

I understand that. When I taught, I learned a lot about teaching from a blind student. Making things clear to him made me a better teacher for everyone.

Yay for that!

Hey, do you know anything about CSD of Minnesota? I ran into a woman I remembered from my days at MRS/DEAF, and I got to talking about getting interpreters for the March On Washington planning meetings.

They also do video interpreting, which I think is very cool! Lemme know if you want info. Also their url is www.c-s-d.org .
